Officers from the Darien Police Department responded to the library on Post Road shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 26, following reports of a stolen laptop.
Police said that the suspect, who was later identified as Andrew Taylor of Seattle told investigators that he took the laptop, but put it into a blue deposit box near the library. He alleged that he intended to send emails with the laptop.
According to police, several library employees witnessed Taylor taking the laptop. He allegedly entered the library and was attempting to get a guest pass. When he was denied, Taylor walked to a nearby desk, took the laptop and walked out of the building. He was instructed to stop, and that he couldn’t leave with the computer, but he continued to leave, ignoring them.
Taylor ultimately put the laptop in a post office box in front of the building, police said. It was later retrieved by members of the USPS.
Library personnel requested that charges be pressed, and Taylor was arrested and charged with sixth-degree larceny. He was held in lieu of a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court this week.
